“Laurens’s books are always synonymous with sensuality and strong-willed heroes and heroines.”
Fresh Fiction

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Capture of the Earl of Glencrae, romance fiction superstar Stephanie Laurens has done it again with this passionate tale of an oh-so-proper lady and the dangerous man for whom she throws caution to the wind. The Lady Risks All in this delightfully sexy and sensuous historical romance novel from the creator of the recklessly romantic Cynster family—Regency England’s most irrepressible clan of sexy rogues and ladies—as well as the acclaimed Bastion Club books. The notorious Neville Roscoe, who lives boldly outside the bounds of proper society, is one of Laurens’s most unforgettable heroes—and the story of his seduction of prim, straight-laced Miranda Clifford is filled with intrigue, danger, and passion that will thrill not only Stephanie Laurens fans, but devoted readers of Lisa Kleypas, Johanna Lindsey, and Mary Balogh as well.

"One of my favorites by this author! Yes it is long and probably could have condensed but truly these two were so complex that the length was justified. Roscoe or Lord Julian gave up so much he could never get back and when faced with the chance to regain it refused out of loyalty to the ones who had provided the means to save his family. Even sacrificing his chance at happiness and a family with the woman he loved. What a woman. No simpering miss here. Miranda was a joy. Her loyalty to her brother was unending, without her he would of have a much different ending. Her determination to go after what she wanted and only what she wanted in the face of disappointing her Aunt Gladys who had drilled respectability into her until my head hurt was beautiful. She made her own happy ending after much thought. She truly weighed the pros and cons gathered her courage and made her happy ending. Bravo Miranda!"

The Lady Risks All Stephanie Laurens 9780062201560 Books Reviews

  • AfterThe Untamed Bride (Black Cobra Quartet) and the rest of the quartet (which I borrowed at the library) I was done with this author. But I got hooked with this one with a teaser chapter after the short story in Royal Bridesmaids An Original Anthology. I wasn't disappointed. On the contrary, I enjoyed the novel a lot. I liked the lengthy story, most of the filler others have complained about being love scenes. I can name few other romantic novels were so many were described. There is also a lot of introspection by the main characters, but they are likeable and attractive enough that you want to know their mental rambling. It is not the kind of book you can't put down, but more a guilty pleasure you can look forward at the end of the day. For someone with time to read it all at once I can imagine it must turn too repetitive. If you liked the author may I recommend Devil's Bride (Cynster Novels) one of my all time favorite and a good introduction to her "world".
  • THE LADY RISKS ALL is the story of Neville Roscoe the mysterious owner of clubs and gaming hells in London. Readers of Laurens' other books will recall Roscoe from THE EDGE OF DESIRE and THE RECKLESS BRIDE. Roscoe lives outside society. We quickly learn that Roscoe was born into an aristocratic family but made the decision to live on the outside. One night a woman, Miranda Clifford barges into his house in order to rescue her younger brother from Roscoe's clutches. Miranda is twenty-nine and has spent her life living beyond reproach in order to make up for her family that made its money in trade and also for women in her family that have acted scandalously. Roscoe and Miranda have soon joined forces to save her brother and family.

Briscoe is a complicated character because while he does good, he has put himself outside of the society that most historical romances focus upon. He is direct and at times brutal while he is also a man who had given up his future and cares for others. Perhaps because Laurens cannot rely on stereotypes of tonnish gentleman, she has created a multidimensional hero.

Miranda is a woman who grows in this book. She has to change in order to be the wool man for Roscoe. I especially liked that Miranda ultimately decides that she must reach our and take what she wants from life and not merely allow things to happen to her. She and Roscoe are similar in fundamental ways which allow them to more closer together and ultimately have a happy ending.

I've read a lot of Stephanie Laurens and this book felt fresher even though it follows a similar plot of there being a mystery that bring the couple together to resolve.

Finally, for fans of the Bastion Club and the Black Cobra Quartet, there are some cameos by Rafe Carstairs, Christian Allardyce and Wolverstone. These appearances are brief and there is nothing missing for those who have not read the previous books.

I absolutely loved this book. I especially liked the fact that there are no magic solutions for the characters in this book. I had expected that the romance would be resolved in a more conventional fashion than it was. Instead, the resolution was true to the characters and was deeply satisfying because of it.
  • Is this the Stephanie Laurens that wrote the Cynster Series? It almost seemed as though someone else was doing the writing. For me to sit down and write a review, I have to be full of sentimental warmth, frustrated beyond belief, or stirred up and not easily calmed down. This book frustrated me pure and simple.

The premise of an aristocrat leaving his life behind and working to turn a gaming empire into a business to support the ducal family household and enterprises was very interesting so I had great hopes for the story. I kept reading and reading and giving this book a chance. However, it never took off for me. The endless descriptions of the encounters of the two lovers, Roscoe/Julian and Miranda left me skimming over those parts and thinking - enough already!

Another thing that I heartily disliked was reading Miranda's thoughts expressed over and over about how she was assessing her life and how she would go on. Again - enough already. She is one of my least favorite heroines. Aside from physical, this book had very little relationship building - not enough to lay a foundation for warmth and love.

In pages, this book was over 8,000 pages long which would have been great if the story had remotely held my interest. The typical number of pages in most of the Regency Romance novels that I read are between 4,500 - 6,500 pages. I rarely pay more than $4.99 for a book. I really regret buying this one. I know that most reviewers gave this a 4 to 5 star rating so I know I'm in the minority.

I will finish by saying that I have greatly enjoyed most of Ms. Laurens' books.
