In the History of Now, historian Scott Powell makes the case for a radical reinterpretation of history. Instead of being thought of as “the study of past,” history must be integrated into a revelation and explanation of the world we live in. In remarkably short order the reader is guided through a synopsis of world cultures and their origins, which anchors a wide-ranging and penetrating analysis of each culture’s own trajectory and, ultimately, its contribution to the flow of human events today. The outcome is a seamless construct of striking explanatory power and relevance. The History of Now is indeed a new kind of history!

"This is a very well written presentation of what Mr Powell considers a completely new approach to history. It draws the reader in immediately, explains the problem in how history is usually done, and presents a solution. My main issue is, given how introductory this book is meant to be, it seems premature here to present possible/likely future trajectories of the main world blocks. (On the other hand, Mr Powell's speculations on the future were very interesting to me.)"

The History of Now A New Kind of History Scott Powell Books Reviews

  • With this book, Scott Powell introduces to the world an entirely new approach to the study of history, one he calls Present-Centrism. Instead of examining the past as an end in itself merely to know how things were, the author very consciously relates the events of the past to the state of the world as we see it around us today, using history to explain how the world of the present came to be what it is. By using this new approach, he is able to answer that question the typical student of history so often asks of the events he studies, “So what?”

For example, what could The Crusades possibly matter to us now? From this book you will learn that for a thousand years the history of the Islamic world was a history of success, and their success in The Crusades added to their sense of triumphalism. If this sense hadn’t been so acute before the ascendancy of the West, they wouldn’t be turning to terrorism now in an attempt to restore their former glory. How about Charlemagne’s now long-gone Frankish Empire? Its significance lies precisely in the fact that it didn’t last, that it was split into the countries of France and Germany, which resulted in many devastating wars and the establishment of the European Union to prevent further wars.

In this book, Scott Powell also introduces other means of integrating historical knowledge. One of these is periodization, the grouping of historical events by their contribution to a particular historical outcome. For example, The Europe of Nations is a period stretching from the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD to the end of World War II in 1945, which was characterized by national antagonisms and the wars fought because of these, and which ultimately resulted in Europe’s subordination to America. Another means of integration the author provides is Anchor Facts, which are the essential facts which comprise a period. Yet another is the integration of timelines of the regional histories into a combined visualization which converges on the period which interconnects them today.

This book could be subtitled “A First History,” both in the sense of a good introduction to the history of the world, and in the sense of the first of its kind.
  • A brief, illuminating outline of the history of today's leading players, ranked according to the significance of the current global impact each of these cultures has in today's world. The cultures covered are Europe, Islam, China, Russia, and the USA.

Included are 'anchor facts' marking the origins and significant existential shifts in the history of each culture; some significant connections / clashes between and among them; and some indication of the manner in which they're likely to continue to interact, and thereby affect the future of human societies.
  • Fascinating. Couldn't put it down. Thank you for this clearly expressed, essentialized history of now. Can't wait for the next episode.
  • This is a very well written presentation of what Mr Powell considers a completely new approach to history. • Historian Scott Powell claims that history is not the study of the past, but a powerful tool that will help you understand the present and prepare for the future.

His book helped me understand both history and current events. After reading The History of Now, I understand the Middle East, America, Europe, Russia, and Asia, and have gleaned the direction in which we are going.

If you want to make sense of the world and understand how we got here and where we are headed, read this book.
  • Mr. Powell has taken the complex topic of World History and broken it down into useful application. Where others have tried and mismanaged the plethora of information, Mr. Powell has succeeded. His presentation of concise well formulated historical accounts transformed my personal understanding of history.
  • I am a history major and this is the best, most informative, interesting and important history book I have ever read! This book should be read by every middle school and high school student!!!
