According to my ideas every border should at least be 20 feet wide, and be cropped only to within 5 feet of the walls. This would allow ample space for the roots of the fruit-trees, and also admit of that portion of the border devoted to vegetable culture occasionally being double-dug - which operation would greatly benefit both the vegetables and the trees, as the digging would be a mild form of root-pruning the latter. The main path would of course be in front of the border, but a light ungravelled path would of necessity be made as near the walls as the trees would admit. These paths, composed of the same soil as the borders, if not trampled too solidly, or much wheeled upon, do not appear to injuriously affect the trees 3 but where it can be man aged, I should advise the use of large square paving-tiles, if for clean liness' sake alone. They could either be laid down closely, to admit of being wheeled upon, or they may be short distances apart, in the way of stepping-stones.

"I love the book. But this book is published in China, and I cannot tolerate the toxic-chemical stench. The book is airing out on a clothesline on my (covered) back porch. There is no way I would put this volume in a child's hands unless that stench goes away."

  • I love the book. But this book is published in China, and I cannot tolerate the toxic-chemical stench. The book is airing out on a clothesline on my (covered) back porch. There is no way I would put this volume in a child's hands unless that stench goes away.
  • This was a lovely story about a girl who must leave her home to go to work in the city to help her family during the Great Depression. She is brave and sweet and instead of dwelling on her problems, she works throughout the story to bring the beauty of flowers to her uncle and his assistants. Her goal is to make her uncle smile--and though she doesn't succeed, she realizes that he does love her and truly cares for her. A lovely tale--with perfect illustrations. I want more by this team!
  • Wonderful works of Tagore! IĆ¢€™m so pleased to get this for me & ordered one for a friend!!
  • A beautiful throwback to the kind of stories that reflect loneliness and love with gentleness and depth that are absent from most children's stories. A little girl goes to live with her uncle during the Great Depression and turns her green thumb into a pathway to her uncles's heart. This is a superb book.
  • One of our favorite picture books. We love the little girl's optimistic attitude, even in difficult situations. And the letters back to her family are so heartwarming. Plus the pictures are just beautiful!
  • My grandkids love this book, our kids love it, and I love it. Beautiful story.
  • This book has become a new favorite for reading with kids. It was a good springboard for a history lesson of the Great Depression and reusing and recycling as kids are needing to learn today. The child in the story always had a very positive outlook on life. The students commented on her attitude which affected the people around her. After reading we took cuttings and planted them in recycled containers for taking home. The artwork was a very special part of the book. We observed the colors used and how they made us feel as we read. A mini-lesson on color was enjoyed. It is a very rich book to be read aloud.
  • This is so lovely i cry when I read it.
