In this spellbinding and suspenseful debut, a young woman haunted by the past returns home to care for her ailing mother and begins to dig deeper into her sister’s unsolved murder.
Sixteen years ago, Sylvie’s sister Persephone never came home. Out too late with the boyfriend she was forbidden to see, Persephone was missing for three days before her body was found—and years later, her murder remains unsolved.
In the present day, Sylvie returns home to care for her estranged mother, Annie, as she undergoes treatment for cancer. Prone to unexplained “Dark Days” even before Persephone’s death, Annie’s once-close bond with Sylvie dissolved in the weeks after their loss, making for an uncomfortable reunion all these years later. Worse, Persephone’s former boyfriend, Ben, is now a nurse at the cancer center where Annie is being treated. Sylvie’s always believed Ben was responsible for the murder—but she carries her own guilt about that night, guilt that traps her in the past while the world goes on around her.
As she navigates the complicated relationship with her mother, Sylvie begins to uncover the secrets that fill their house—and what really happened the night Persephone died. As it turns out, the truth will set you free, once you can bear to look at it.
The Winter Sister is a mesmerizing portrayal of the complex bond between sisters, between mothers and daughters alike, and forces us to ask ourselves—how well do we know the people we love most?

- I've always been blown away by Megan's writing, whether it be her poetry or short stories, so I could not wait to read her debut novel, and it did not disappoint! It's as beautiful as everything else I've read. I couldn't get through it fast enough, and despite what other reviewers said, I didn't find this to be predictable whatsoever. I started to figure out who murdered Persephone exactly where I feel I was supposed to. Sylvie was a complex, interesting character. As was her mother and her relationship with her mother. Oh, my gosh. How awkward and noble of Sylvie to go back and care for her while she's dying. Her relationship with her aunt is also very endearing. This is very well done. I can't wait to read Megan's next book!

- if you like mystery/thriller novels with some darkness to them, this book is for you. The characters are haunted by Persephone̢۪s unsolved murder, and Megan Collins expertly captured how grief and a lack of closure effect people in so many different ways. There are quite a few twists and turns, leaving me guessing almost all the way to the end. Ms. Collins has a great gift for writing, and her prose hums with her talent on every page. If her debut novel is this good, I can̢۪t wait to see where she goes from here.
- I absolutely loved The Winter Sister and only put it down begrudgingly. A compelling reimagining of the myth of Persephone and Demeter is the foundation of the novel, yet the plot is pure suspense. The characters, especially Sylvie, are fleshed out. And it might be the language itself, poetic and beautiful, that is the most impressive thing about this novel. This is an incredibly promising debut novel.
- From the first page I was hooked. The drama never stopped. So many secrets, so real!!
- This book was hard to put down.
From the first sentence, I was hooked! It kept me thinking, trying to figure out before turning the page, what would happen next, and who was responsible. I'm a slow reader, and finished the book in three days. Honestly, I wished there was more! - This is the best novel that I've read in a while - and jaw dropping! It kept me intrigued and wanting more until the last page, I cannot wait to read more from this author. This is a must read!
- I had the killer pegged early on in this book. Despite this fact, there were pieces of the puzzle I still needed answered.
