John Vigor had it all a loving family, a remarkable career as a columnist syndicated throughout South Africa, and a comfortable home in Durban, one of South Africa s most beautiful cities. But an apartheid regime, and a clampdown by government forces on the people s freedom of expression, made John decide to leave the life and country that he loved. Together with his wife and seventeen-year-old son, John prepared to give up their life of security and contentment and voyage to America aboard their thirty-one-foot sloop, Freelance. Small Boat to Freedom details a journey of conscience and courage that took John and his family from Durban, past the aptly named Cape of Storms, around the treacherous Cape of Good Hope, and across the open Atlantic and the equator to a new home in the United States. After making land in Florida, John and his family eventually made their new home in beautiful Washington State, sailing the waters of Puget Sound.

"I was surprised to learn that a sailboat escape from South Africa involved a white family. Their reasons for leaving and pre-voyage thinking are explained in detail. As is the journey itself, with a competent sailor and his crew of wife and son who both lacked blue water experience. While well managed, such a voyage always includes difficult - indeed dangerous - times. These are handled and described most engagingly by a talented writer. The only thing missing is a sketch of the "twistle yard". Welcome to America indeed!"

Small Boat To Freedom A Journey of Conscience to a New Life in America John Vigor 9781574093032 Books Reviews
- I have been sailing for years and always enjoyed my trips crewing on a Beneteau 40' for a friend while taking his boat to Annapolis for winter storage from New Rochelle NY. We would go down the East river out into the ocean from the NYC harbor to the Delaware Bay up to and through the Chesapeake canal to the Chesapeake Bay to Annapolis.
Now I am reeling around and around in my little fantasy world. I finished reading "Small Boat to Freedom" by John Vigor, who in 1987, with his wife and 17 year old son sailed from Durban South Africa to Fort Lauderdale FL in a 31 foot boat. They went around the cape to Cape Town ... to St. Helena where Napoleon was imprisoned and died ... bypassed Ascention Island (where all sailors usually stopped) to Fernando de Noronha to Bequia ... up through the Leeward Islands in the West Indies - St. Marteen/St Martin - Tortolal (BVI) to the Bahamas ... to Ft Lauderdale. Prior to this trip his wife and son had never sailed on a boat overnight. He had blue water (ocean) racing experience.
John's writing style is incredibly engaging and I learned a thing or two from his explanations of things that went wrong and things that went right. Mainly, he convinced me that my lifestyle (not exactly mainstream) and my great love of the ocean is shared by many. This book brought back so many wonderful memories as I've recently sailed the BVI via a bareboat charter. You don't have to own a boat these days to enjoy the ocean and sailing. Just buy this book. What a delight! P.S. I wish he had a few pictures and a map in the book. - I was surprised to learn that a sailboat escape from South Africa involved a white family.
